August 14 – Kokomo

The first day of the school year! Of course it had to be Kokomo by the Beach Boys. What better way to start off the new school year than with some Caribbean Island vibes?

About the song choice: This song has been a running gag in our family. It started several years ago when I took Zoe and her brother John to Red Robin for dinner. Over the course of dinner, Kokomo came on the sound system, so of course I sang along. This embarrassed Zoe to no end that I would sing (albeit slightly off key) in public. The three of us bantered back and forth about the song.

On our way home, I immediately cued up Kokomo to play in our vehicle on repeat for our 10 minute drive home. And once we got to our neighborhood, I rolled down all of the car windows and turned up the volume so anyone we drove by would know what we were listening to. A lesson was learned that day not to speak out against the Beach Boys with Dad.

When Zoe and I went to breakfast yesterday morning to celebrate the successful Day 0 test run, she mentioned casually that she was surprised I didn’t pick Kokomo for that day’s music choice. Be careful what you wish for….
