My name is Jerry, and my daughter Zoe is a high school senior. Zoe is not a morning person and has asked for some help getting up in the mornings for school. She told me I could come into her room in the morning with music blaring to wake her up. So I did. Again and again and again, morning after morning after morning.

It has expanded beyond the school days. Now if she needs to get up early on the weekends for work or a school activity, Dad steps in with another song.

I pick the songs, but I do get some input from Mom along the way. I’m picking songs that I like, or songs that may have some tie to the day in question. For example, my song choice for September 21 should be pretty obvious if you are familiar with pop music. Even Zoe guessed that song in advance of her wake-up song.

You’ll notice that I play a lot of Beach Boys songs. The Beach Boys have always been my favorite group, and my attempts to pass along my love of the harmonies and music haven’t been successful — yet! Maybe hearing a Beach Boys song each Friday will help turn her around?

So join in with us as I add some music to Zoe’s day.
